- Real-time transcription and cross-meeting search.

Fireflies and Otter both record and transcribe meetings, generate AI summaries and let you search and work with past conversations. In a Fireflies vs Otter decision, the real difference is orientation rather than raw capability.
Based on our research, Fireflies places particular emphasis on integrations, CRM workflows and automation after the meeting. Otter places more emphasis on live transcription, working inside the conversation, editing and collaborating around notes.
That does not mean either product has better transcription or better summaries. Our research found no independent, directly comparable accuracy study that supports such a claim. This comparison is about workflow fit, guided by three questions:
- How many meetings do you need to process?
- Do you need to work inside the transcript during the meeting?
- What needs to happen afterwards: a simple summary, tasks, CRM updates or automation?

How the two products are positioned
Fireflies covers meeting recording, transcription, AI summaries, search, AI Skills, CRM integrations, post-meeting workflows and automations.
Otter covers live transcription, conversation access, editing, collaboration, AI Chat, meeting summaries and action items.
Neither set is objectively better. They reflect different ideas of where the value of a meeting assistant lies.
Fireflies vs Otter pricing
Standard prices below were checked against the official Fireflies pricing page and Otter pricing page in September 2026. Temporary promotions and regional discounts are excluded.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fireflies Free | $0 | $0 | Permanent plan; AI summaries are not unlimited |
| Fireflies Pro | $18/user/month | $10/user/month | Pricing page lists unlimited transcription and standard AI summaries; advanced AI features use 20 monthly AI credits; 8,000 minutes of storage per seat; 2-hour meeting limit |
| Fireflies Business | $29/user/month | $19/user/month | 3-hour meeting limit; more advanced CRM and team analytics |
| Otter Basic | $0 | $0 | 300 minutes/month; 30 minutes per conversation; 3 lifetime file imports |
| Otter Pro | $16.99/user/month | $8.33/user/month | 1,200 minutes/month; 90-minute meeting limit; 10 imports/month |
| Otter Business | $30/user/month | $19.99/user/month | Unlimited in-app meetings; 4-hour meeting limit; separate import limits |
The main difference is how usage is capped. Fireflies lists unlimited transcription and standard AI summaries on paid plans, but places limits elsewhere: advanced AI features draw on a monthly AI-credit allowance, Pro storage is capped, and meeting duration is limited. Otter uses clearer monthly minute allowances on Basic and Pro, then removes the in-app meeting cap on Business.
Otter's Basic plan also limits access to your 25 most recent conversations and 20 AI Chat queries per user per month, which matters if you want a searchable archive. Pro raises AI Chat to 50 queries and Business to 200.
Fireflies' Free plan details, including storage and how AI credits apply, vary with how you sign up and are presented differently across its materials. Check the current plan page before relying on a specific allowance.
Fireflies vs Otter for transcription
Live use. Otter is built around live transcription: you can follow and work with the transcript while the conversation is happening. Fireflies focuses more on processing the meeting once it is captured.
Languages. Fireflies documents more than 100 languages for standard transcription, plus a Multi-Language mode covering more than 60 languages that it describes as beta. Otter supports a smaller set of major languages, including English, Spanish and French. Otter's own documentation is not fully consistent on the exact count, so confirm your language on Otter's help pages before subscribing.
Imports and files. Both accept uploaded audio and video. Import limits differ by plan and are counted separately from live meeting capture.
Speakers and editing. Both identify speakers and let you edit transcripts, although speaker identification may not behave the same in every recording mode.
Neither product can be shown to be more accurate from the evidence available. Accuracy depends heavily on audio quality, accents and overlapping speech.
Fireflies vs Otter for meeting recording
Fireflies offers three routes, according to its current documentation:
- A meeting assistant that joins the call as a participant
- A Chrome extension that can capture Google Meet without a bot
- A desktop app that captures system audio without adding a participant
Otter offers two main routes:
- Otter Notetaker, which can join Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams
- A Mac and Windows desktop app that records locally without Notetaker joining, which requires audio permissions
Older comparisons often describe Otter as bot-dependent. That is no longer accurate. However, bot-based and bot-free modes do not necessarily provide identical features. Video capture, speaker identification, automatic start and participant notifications can differ by mode, so check the mode you plan to use.
AI summaries, chat and meeting intelligence
Fireflies provides AI summaries, action items, AskFred for questions about meetings, AI Skills for specific outputs, meeting insights and CRM automation. Some AI features draw on AI credits, depending on plan.
Otter provides AI summaries, action items, Otter AI Chat, custom meeting templates and conversation search.
The difference is where the output goes. Fireflies is particularly relevant when meeting information needs to continue into another system. Otter is particularly relevant when you want to work directly with the conversation, transcript and notes. We make no claim that either produces objectively better summaries.
Fireflies vs Otter for CRM and workflow automation
This is where the two products differ most clearly.
Fireflies documents integrations including HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio and Zapier. Depending on plan, advanced functions such as Autofill CRM and deal intelligence can push meeting information into CRM records.
Otter documents Salesforce, HubSpot and Zapier integrations. Some advanced CRM synchronisation is documented for Enterprise and sales-focused use cases. Otter's list of AI Chat connections is presented inconsistently across its documentation, so we have not listed specific connections here.
Fireflies is more strongly oriented toward documented CRM and post-meeting workflows. Otter may be enough when your main need is capturing, searching, editing and questioning conversations rather than automating every step after the call.

Considering Fireflies for CRM-driven work?
If your meetings need to feed a CRM or automation, Fireflies' Free plan is a low-cost way to check the fit. If live transcription matters more, Otter may suit you better.
Try FirefliesFireflies vs Otter for freelancers
There is no universal answer for freelancers. The right tool depends on your workflow.
Discovery calls
Fireflies may suit freelancers who want call information to feed a CRM or automation. Otter may suit freelancers who prioritise live transcription and working with the transcript during the call.
Client meetings
Both record, transcribe, summarise and extract action items, and both now offer bot-free recording. Fireflies leans toward sending follow-ups into other tools. Otter leans toward shared notes and collaboration inside the conversation.
Interviews and imported recordings
Import limits matter here. Otter Basic allows only three file imports in total, and Pro allows 10 per month. Fireflies also applies separate limits to uploaded files, even where meeting transcription is described as unlimited.
Long consultations
Meeting length limits differ. Fireflies allows up to 2 hours on Pro and 3 hours on Business. Otter allows 90 minutes on Pro and 4 hours on Business. Otter Basic caps each conversation at 30 minutes.
Can Fireflies and Otter record meetings without a bot?
Yes. Both now offer bot-free recording.
- Meeting assistant recording: a bot joins the call as a visible participant. Both products offer this.
- Desktop or local capture: the app records system audio on your computer. Both products offer this.
- Browser capture: Fireflies' Chrome extension can capture Google Meet without a bot.
Functionality is not identical across these modes, so the choice of mode can affect what you get afterwards.
What users say about Fireflies and Otter
The following reflects recurring themes in third-party user reviews. It is not ConfidencePilot testing, and individual experiences vary.
Fireflies: users frequently mention ease of use and time savings. Some raise concerns about navigation, the presence of the meeting bot, AI output quality and privacy.
Otter: users frequently value live transcription. Some report capture issues and reduced accuracy with accents, background noise and overlapping speech.
Fireflies vs Otter for privacy and security
Both companies report SOC 2 Type II compliance and data protection measures. See Fireflies security and Otter privacy and security.
Fireflies states that meeting content and personal data are not used to train its internal or external models.
Otter states that third-party AI providers do not train their models on user data. However, its privacy policy, effective June 16, 2026, describes improving Otter's own models using de-identified recordings and transcripts, which may still contain personal information.
A security certification does not decide whether recording a particular client meeting is appropriate. You still need to consider participant consent, permissions, sharing, retention, client requirements and applicable laws.
