Fireflies AI is a meeting assistant designed to record, transcribe, summarize and analyze conversations across platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. But Fireflies has evolved beyond simple meeting transcription. Its real strength is the way meeting data can connect with the rest of your workflow. With a large range of integrations, searchable meeting history, CRM capabilities and increasingly sophisticated AI features, Fireflies can become more of a meeting intelligence platform than a simple note-taking tool. For freelancers and consultants, that distinction matters.

Fireflies currently offers four main subscription tiers. Annual-billing prices are Fireflies' listed annual rates, not promotions, but they require paying for a year up front.

Free storage is described as 400 minutes per seat (pooled across the team) in Fireflies' help center but as 400 minutes per team on its pricing page. Included AI credits are shared across the workspace rather than added per seat. Confirm current pricing on the official Fireflies pricing page before subscribing.

Free

The Free plan gives you access to Fireflies without a subscription, but new users have a limited number of transcription credits by default. Fireflies' current limits depend on how the account is created: new users receive 3 transcription credits through the web app, 5 through the Chrome extension, or 10 through the mobile app. Enabling Auto-join can unlock unlimited transcription for eligible, supported meetings, but this does not mean unlimited storage or unlimited advanced AI features. Uploaded files (up to 100MB and 150 minutes each) and dialer recordings use one transcription credit each, recordings are limited to 2 hours per meeting, and downloading transcripts requires a paid plan.

The Free plan also includes 20 AI credits for advanced AI features. Most Fireflies documentation describes these as one-time credits, although one Free-plan help article says "per month", so treat them as one-time unless Fireflies confirms otherwise. Best for: Trying Fireflies before paying or for relatively light meeting use.

What the Free storage limit means in practice

These are illustrative calculations, not tests run inside Fireflies.

• Example A: four 30-minute client meetings a week is about 480 minutes in a four-week month. That already exceeds 400 minutes of storage, so you would need to delete older meetings within the first month to keep recording.
• Example B: ten 45-minute meetings a week is about 1,800 minutes in a four-week month, more than four times the Free storage cap. The Free plan is not a realistic long-term archive at that volume.

Meeting time, stored minutes and AI actions are separate limits. Transcribing a call through Auto-join does not use AI credits, but keeping it uses storage, and asking AskFred questions about it uses AI credits. Upgrading raises the storage cap but does not remove the need to manage advanced AI-credit usage.

Pro

Fireflies Pro costs $18 per user per month with monthly billing, or $10 per user per month billed annually. It includes unlimited transcription, unlimited AI summaries, 8,000 minutes of storage per seat and unlimited integrations. Best for: Freelancers who regularly have meetings and want fewer limitations.

Business

Business costs $29/user/month with monthly billing, or $19/user/month billed annually. It adds unlimited storage, 30 AI credits and more advanced capabilities, particularly around teams, private channels and CRM-related workflows. Best for: Consultants, agencies and small businesses that want meeting information to become part of their wider workflow.

Enterprise

Enterprise costs $39/user/month billed annually (annual only) and is aimed at organizations requiring more advanced administration, private storage and enterprise functionality.

Transcription, Storage and AI Credits: What Is Actually Unlimited?

"Unlimited" on Fireflies' pricing page refers to specific things. Three separate limits apply:

Transcription. On Free, Fireflies says Auto-join enables unlimited transcription for eligible meetings on supported platforms. Uploads and dialer calls still use transcription credits, and uploads from integrations such as Dropbox or the API are subject to monthly rate limits.

Storage. Recordings, uploads and dialer calls all count toward the same total. When you reach the cap, Fireflies says new meetings are still captured, but you must delete older meetings to access new ones.

Standard summaries versus advanced AI. Fireflies' AI credits guide says standard transcription, notes and recap emails are covered by your plan, and that summary templates do not consume credits; only custom summary sections do. Features that do consume AI credits include AskFred, AI Skills, Magic Soundbites, custom summary sections, Autofill CRM, and the Daily Digest and Meeting Prep features, which Fireflies says are enabled by default. On the Free plan, Fireflies' help articles are inconsistent about whether summaries draw on transcription credits or AI credits.

How Fireflies AI Credits Work

AI credits are separate from transcription. They power advanced features such as AI Skills, AskFred, Sales Assist suggestions in Live Assist, Voice Agents, Magic Soundbites, custom summary sections, Autofill CRM, and the Daily Digest and Meeting Prep parts of the Personal Assistant. The number of credits used depends on the complexity of each request; Fireflies describes this as dynamic AI credit pricing.

According to Fireflies' AI credits guide, every account starts with one-time credits based on plan: Free 20, Pro 20, Business 30, Enterprise 50. These are pooled at the team level, do not increase when you add teammates, and do not expire. When you upgrade, the new plan's credits replace the old ones rather than adding to them.

Buying more credits and auto-upgrade

• Extra credits can be purchased only on paid plans, starting at 50 credits for $5/month (or $4/month billed annually). Annual credit plans are about 20% cheaper.
• Purchased credits auto-renew on the chosen billing interval unless paused, and unused purchased credits do not roll over.
• If a paid user's included credits run out and they have no AI-credit subscription, Fireflies says it automatically subscribes them to the $5/month, 50-credit tier and shows a banner on the dashboard.
• Existing AI-credit subscribers who run out are automatically moved to the next higher tier; on annual credit plans the extra charge is pro-rated.
• Free users who run out see a paywall and are prompted to upgrade, with no auto-charge.
• Fireflies documents a way to pause or cancel auto-upgrades, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.

It also offers other capture methods: Fireflies documents that its Chrome extension can record meetings without adding a bot, with an auto-capture option described for Google Meet, and the mobile app can transcribe in-person conversations.

These methods are not interchangeable. The extension records audio, while full video recording is tied to the Notetaker, and rate-limit rules differ between capture methods. We could not verify an equivalent bot-free workflow for every meeting platform or operating system, so check Fireflies' current documentation for the platform your clients use.

Language Support, Consent and Client Privacy

Fireflies says it can transcribe meetings in over 100 languages and lets users set a default language, auto-detect the primary language spoken, or use a multi-language mode. The documentation we reviewed does not clearly establish whether translation covers the same languages, whether summaries can always be produced in a different language, how reliably mixed-language calls (for example French and English) are handled, or whether speaker identification works equally well in every language.

On privacy, Fireflies' security page states that it does not train on customer data by default, lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA compliance, and offers features such as custom data retention and private storage on higher tiers. Recording rules vary by country and by client contract. Using a recording tool does not on its own satisfy consent requirements, so tell participants when a call is recorded and follow the rules that apply to you. This is not legal advice.

Is Fireflies AI Good for Freelancers?

Yes, particularly if your work involves a lot of client meetings. A freelancer who has five or ten client calls every week can quickly accumulate a large amount of information. Keeping track of:
